How to create a self-care routine that sticks
/We all recognize the importance of self-care, but sometimes the “routine” can be too rigid and not allow you to unwind.
Here are a few tips on how to make a self-care routine that sticks AND that doesn’t feel like a chore:
Do things you actually enjoy. When creating your routine, you want to make sure that you are doing things that you enjoy and that YOU actually like to do. If you don’t like yoga, don’t add it to your routine! Find something that you enjoy and that works for you. Consider what makes you feel energized and full—that’s the thing you need to do. Also, consider doing activities that take about 10-15 minutes.
Get back to the basics. Think about the basic things in life, like eating, sleeping and drinking water. We live busy lifestyles that sometimes pushes these things to the sidelines. Make them your top priorities in each day. Ensuring that you have a solid sleep routine, eating a set number of meals, including snacking (healthy snacks, of course) and staying hydrating can improve your overall physical and mental wellness.
Focus on the present. With today’s technology, it’s easy to get caught up in capturing the moment and not living in it. However, when you are doing something you enjoy, you should take every opportunity to stay connected to the experience.
One of the best ways to do this is by being mindful. Put simply, being mindful is paying particularly close attention to what is happening in the moment and learning to take pleasure in activities related to self-care without worrying about all the things you need to do when it’s done (it being self-care). Instead of stressing over your lengthy list of things to do while you’re out with friends, set it aside and be present in having a good time.
Maximize on your free time. The saying “the early bird catches the worm” most definitely applies here, as starting your day off even a little earlier will allow you to maximize on opportunities for self-care. Practicing self-care activities in the mornings allows you to energize your mind and body and set the tone for your day. This is also a great time because you’re not yet focused on the day’s work or the energy you have to put into it. This is a great way to intentionally place your energy into yourself. This will be your set time in the mornings and it won’t feel like a huge task to get it done.
Hold yourself accountable. “You have to put your mask on first” before you can help someone else. We have to get in the habit of taking care of ourselves before we take care of others. We truly cannot allow ourselves to continue giving what we do not have or “pouring from an empty cup” is another expression you may hear. If you think it will be a challenge to hold yourself accountable, find an accountability partner who will point out when you’re not prioritizing yourself.
