The Sick Day Struggle

I’m over sick days y’all! Granted they have decreased significantly since we moved in July and for that I am forever grateful. But when they come, they come. Enter my feverish, clingy, 2 year old terror—Aiden. A clear indicator for the busy body to be sick is simply him slowing down. That’s the first thing. He is calm. He will sit, relax and just be present. No climbing on furniture, no running around—just mellow. That’s when you know it’s coming. Then the fever hits and it hits hard.

Today is Day 2. I wanted to see if it would pass without requiring a doctor’s visit. You know, maybe it’s a quick cold paired with a fever and whatever he’s fighting would go away. But the way his head burned my hand at 3AM (I’m exaggerating), I had to make the decision to schedule a sick visit.

Yesterday was cool though. We relaxed and chilled and at the end of the day took a quick walk outside to get some fresh air. Today is a little different though. The clingy-ness is at an all time high. I’m getting hugs every 2 minutes. He is climbing on me, over me—everything. Often they are cute, but the high frequency is driving me crazy, while I’m trying to straighten up, send emails, coordinate and organize things. He’s fussy, so I’m not fighting my toddler. When he’s sick, I accommodate. He wants to eat muffins all day—then we’re eating muffins all day. Sick days are not the time to get into a power struggle over food. The appetite is already decreased and both his and my frustration tolerance is LOW. Not to mention, he’s coughing and sneezing in my face every chance he gets. Can I get some Emergen-C please!? I’m on DayQuil now, so hopefully I start feeling better. We have things to do!

I just know that sick days are tough for me and I’m sure they are the same for other parents. I try to keep the house clean, especially because I want to Lysol it DOWN regularly (and will once he takes today’s nap), but the roadrunner still finds a way to destroy everything. I’m trying to get things done, but I have to enter SAHM mode and there goes that. Naptime becomes primetime, but guess who passed out during naptime yesterday because she was feeling low? You guessed it, this mom here! It’s all good! Just want the little one to feel better, so we can be well and get back to normal!

How do you adjust to routine changes when the little ones are sick?
