SELF CARE SUNDAY: I’M PICKING UP BOOKS AGAIN

I thoroughly enjoy reading y’all. I love to hold a book. I love to smell books (yes, I’m a nerd like that). However, I started listening to an audiobook, so I could multitask and do other tasks around the house and I just feel disconnected. It was my way of still enjoying books, but I was feeling unfulfilled.

Currently I’m listening to Stay With Me by Ayobami Adebayo. The book has been an amazing, but I feel like I missed out on so many parts and minor details due to getting distracted by other things going on around me. If I was laying down, I was able to tune in and focus fully on the book. You all know how easy it is to get caught up when a text message comes in or the phone rings.

We have to be intentional. I mentioned in previous posts that we should schedule time specific to our self care and keep hold to it. Allowing ourselves to become distracted during this time is a disservice. What I am committing to is reading at least one book a month. I’m going to give myself at least 30 minutes a day as a starting point. This will be my uninterrupted reading time.

In order to be successful, this time also has to take place while Aiden is sleeping. When he’s older, we’ll share in our reading time together.

Let’s remember the importance of self-care:  It helps you to avoid getting to that point–the point of heightened stress. It decreases the negative effects of stress. It allows you to function at your full capacity and prevents the stress from taking over. Remember, these things take practice. You have to give yourself time. Don’t be too hard on yourself for the time that it takes. Allow yourself some wiggle room.

To develop a new habit and addition to your routine:

  • Start small

  • Schedule specific time

  • Eliminate distractions (put your phone on do not disturb, turn the tv off, etc)

  • Set a timer

  • Commit and follow through!

Happy Sunday! Enjoy yourselves!
